Welcome to State Street Church

State Street Congregational Church of the United Church of Christ

An Open and Affirming Church

We are people who seek to learn and to follow the teachings of Jesus. In that spirit we welcome all persons in all their fullness including their race, their gender, their creed, their sexual orientation, their family status, their age, their physical and their mental abilities.

State Street Church is a progressive, growing, changing and adapting church with appeal to our neighborhood and the Greater Portland area. We strive to live out our faith as Christians in this rapidly changing and chaotic world.

Advent Prayer Vigil
Sunday December 6th
Noon - Midnight

A 12 hour vigil for Peace: personal, family, community and world will be held on the Second Sunday of Advent at the beginning of Hanukah, the day before the anniversary of the bombing of Pearl Harbor. Special emphasis is on world peace and especially the conflict in the Middle East and the refugee situation. The doors to the chapel will be open after coffee hour until midnight and people can walk in silently and sit down to pray or meditate. Material will be available on various aspects of peace. All are welcome!

The Bible and Faith:
An Exploration for Doubters and Others

For all their differences, all Christians agree that the bible is the inspirer and authority for their faith.  But how does the Bible inspire and what vision of things does it authorize? Answers will be sought in this discussion series. Because nobody reads the Bible without preconceptions, all the participants will be asked to be “doubters” and approach these ancient writings afresh. The group will decide what issues they will focus on. Members will read relevant Scripture passages and come together to share findings for six times every two weeks, starting on Tuesday, September 15, in the music room. There will be two groups: one from 10:00 a.m. to noon and also one from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. The leader will be the Rev. Paul Allen, pastor emeritus of the Winnetka (Illinois) Congregational Church.
